Free Internet Marketing Tip 200

Early Friday morning it looked like Sacha Baron Cohen had done it again with his new film Brüno. With post-midnight ticket sales in the neighborhood of $1.6 million some Hollywood insiders were predicting around $50 million for the opening weekend.

Bruno Poster

Well, $50 million didn't happen. Brüno finished the weekend with a respectable $30.4 million. But, $20 million is a pretty big gap... what caused such an erroneous projection? Well, TIME thinks Twitter is to blame.

Did Twitter cost Brüno millions? Tell us what you think.

"Brüno's box-office decline from Friday to Saturday indicates that the film's brand of outrage was not the sort to please most moviegoers — and that their tut-tutting got around fast. Brüno could be the first movie defeated by the Twitter effect."

With techsavvy moviegoers tweeting their opinions to literally millions of followers, the micro-blogging site can make or break a film in one day.

Days after the movie was released, Brüno is still a trending topic on Twitter. Users can't seem to stop tweeting about the film. Sure, some of the tweets are positive saying how funny the film is... while others are incredibly harsh and could have contributed to the Twitter effect that was mentioned above...

It's hard to say if Twitter cost Brüno millions at the box office. The film had already been under fire from The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) so it's unclear how much impact Twitter actually had.

But, in any case this is a new trend we're sure to keep an eye on.

I have been covering Internet business and webmaster news for nearly 10 years now. If I have learned anything over the course of the past decade it is that you just never know what you can expect to see in Internet news every day. Most recent case in point, Twitter’s consideration for a Nobel Peace prize.

That's right. A Nobel Peace Prize. For Twitter. Mark Pfeifle at the Christian Science Monitor writes; "Without Twitter, the people of Iran would not have felt empowered and confident to stand up for freedom and democracy." As impressive as that sounds, I am left feeling a little suspect about the validity of the claim. Call me jaded, but I just really have a hard time thinking that proponents of democracy in the Middle East looked at Twitter and thought to themselves "Now's our chance!".

Don't get me wrong, I love Twitter. I use it all the time, but let's not get too carried away here folks. Does anybody really think Twitter is going to bring peace and democracy to the Middle East? Hey, I hope I'm wrong and it does, then it can move right on to ending hunger and curing cancer...

Free Internet Marketing Tip 198

As you know getting customers to the site is only half of the battle.
The customer has to be willing to buy whatever you offer them.

You have to convince the customer that your product or service
is exactly what they need, and they need it now.

Sometimes even 10 minutes later might be too late, if they have
the chance to discuss it with someone who will plant seeds of
doubts in their minds.

Today I would like to offer you something special.
Something we have not offered since the beginning of that system,
which was around 4 years ago.

I'm sure you are familiar with Pay per Click advertising.
I want to let you know that we have this kind of system,
which successfully delivers customers to our advertisers for years.

You might be also aware that for example Google Adwords,
the most known PPC advertising system around, is quite expensive
to use these days.

Some keywords are so competitive that it is not even thinkable
to start using them.

You can't find any reasonable keywords for less than $0.50 and
in some competitive areas even $2 or $20 is not enough to show
in the searches.

Here is my offer to you. Our system is not as popular as Google
Adwords, so our keywords are much less competitive.
You can start advertising starting from $0.01 and you will never
have to pay more than $1.0 per keyword.

Remember that a click is a click regardless of where the person
is clicking from, and you only pay if someone clicks.

On top of that, for very limited time as our valued customer,
we will offer you buy 1 get 2 scenario.

e.g. when you put $10 into your account, we will double it.

You will see $20 after you finished ordering this service.

Isn't this good idea to test the market and discover how effective
are the keywords you have chosen?

Isn't it a good idea to test how effective your promotion is
for half the price?

Heck, for this price you could just run a survey and ask your
customers if what you offer is of any interests to them.

By the way, instead of selling directly, try to get as much information
about your visitors first, and then be more targeted.

I call it shooting ducks in the barrel.

So, happy advertising. The Link to order the double credits is here:

P.S. The promotion will stop once we have reached 1000
orders, so please hurry to take advantage of this offer.

Elements Of A Good Design

By Moonrise Productions(c) 2009

One resoundingly negative consequence of the amazíng advances in computing power over the last 25 or so years is the notion, still popular despite constant debunking, that all you need to be a designer today is to buy a computer (usually a Macintosh).

When over-caffeinated pundits were first promoting the term "desktop publishing" in the mid-1980s, many said the new technology would result in so many great new print publications (this was before the Internet boom) that it would put the First Amendment into overdrive.

What really happened, of course, is that entirely unqualified, untrained and untalented people got hold of a Mac, a LaserWriter and some software and proceeded to crank out a few metric tons of 300dpi landfill.

My, how judgmental, you may think. Oddly enough, for all the counterculture tendencies of some, artists in general are among the most judgmental and elitist folks around, and have no problem observing (and saying) that people are not "equal" when it comes to design talent.

A clever advertisement from that bygone "DTP" era promoted a graphic design firm with the tagline, "Using Picasso's paintbrush doesn't make you Picasso". Since this is a principle and not a value judgment, it is as true now, and will be as true in 2050, as it was then. Fact is, there are elements of a good design that must be attended to and contended with, no matter the medium - print, broadcast, web, even mobile phone displays.

Classic Components

Think of the elements of design as the basic building blocks. These elements will be part of everything you design, from consumer products and furniture to magazine pages and billboards, whether you know that or not. (For now, we will restrict our discussion to the layouts that are common to print and web publishing.) It should go without saying, but very little does anymore, that understanding these basic elements will enable you to create more powerful pages for your packaging, ad, magazine or website.

At the most basic level, there are five elements in any design:

1. Lines and Linework

These terms do not refer to pen-and-ink or pencil sketches, but to borders, frames and rules. Horizontal or vertical, thick or thin, regular or irregular, they help define and delimit spaces around various elements on your pages. Good linework increases both the readability and "directionality" (see #5, below) of the design as a whole.

2. Shape

Any enclosed area, form or contour in your design is a shape. Shapes in most layouts are square or rectangular, but nothing says they must be, and circles are useful, too. You can also use images to create other, regular or irregular shapes.

3. Texture

Texture imparts a "surface" feeling, and is tactile in printed matter, so choosing the paper stock-matte, weave, coated - is a design decision, too. Textures on layouts meant for broadcast or the Internet are visual only, but still key.

4. Color

Color is probably the element that most designers are at least acutely aware of, if not schooled in. However, color is not required in many designs, and some art educators suggest creating designs without any color first. The artist, in this view, should then add only as much color as needed to enhance or complete the design. Another school of thought holds that color should be one of the first elements determined. Experience and experimentation will help every artist develop a good color sense and strategy.

5. Direction

Effectively designed layouts, in magazines or on your computer screen, usually have a sense of motion. A good design will lead the reader's eyes through the design deliberately, using color changes, shapes, linework and copy placement to direct viewers' attention to what the designer wants them to see.

Balance and Interest

Other considerations enter in to the process of making good design choices, such as the feelings of space, balance, action and even excitement. The important thing for young, inexperienced designers to remember is that "less is more". One can often identify the design work of a beginner by a lack of open (or "negative") space, an overdose of motion or color contrast, the proliferation of different typefaces and conflicting directionality. Rather than pull every tool and trick out of the bag, the designer needs to remember the ultimate aim of the layout, which for pages in print or on the web is quite simple: Draw the reader in so you can deliver your message.

It seems much simpler after, say, three or four years in a fast-paced, high quality, well-managed design studio. One of the simpler ways of judging a page design is to ask, Does it say "read me" when you look at it? Frankly, some print and web pages look like the backside of a rental agreement, while others seem designed to confuse the readers or test their reactions to optical illusions.

The bottom line of good design is, quite simply, to attract readers' attention, direct it in a particular way and, in concert with the copywriting, make a positive impression. It is, after all, "commercial art" at which most artists work. It becomes much easier for them to do as they learn to leave their egos out of it and simply do what is necessary, proper and effective. If they are unable to do so, perhaps they should go get one of Picasso's paintbrushes and be a different kind of artist entirely.

Free Internet Marketing Tip 189

Netbooks are apparently surging in popularity. Some of the more recent data suggests that some 30 million netbooks will be sold this year. That's a fair amount of hardware. Clearly, people are hot for netbooks. I just don't see why.

Netbooks are like like a regular laptop except they are smaller. Kind of like the iPhone or one of the 20 Android phones coming out. They aren't as powerful as a regular laptop, but you can do basic web surfing, texting and Twittering. Kind of like iPhones or one of the 20 Android phones coming out. They are a smaller form factor and easier to lug around than a full fledged laptop. Also kind of like the iPhone or one of the 20 Android phones coming out.

So, what the heck is a netbook? Is it a phone with a bigger screen or a laptop with a little brain? Either way, is there a real reason why I am supposed to want to drag yet another gadget around with me everywhere? What am I missing here? Where's the draw? I can check my email on my phone. I web surf on my phone. I can update Twitter, catch up on sports scores and read articles all just fine on my phone -- and my phone sucks (I am upgrading soon). What do I need a netbook for?

More to the point, what does ANYbody need a netbook for? Today's phones do a pretty good job with the web. Over the next 2 or 3 years, assuming technology progresses like it always has, they will get even better. I guess I just need somebody to explain to me the netbook's 'niche' here because to this point, I see no 'need' for their existence whatsoever.

Hardware and service providers are definitely on board. Most telecom providers have announced or already launched some sort of subsidized netbook program. Your telecom providers love subsidy programs. They typically involve lengthy contract extensions. Maybe there's more to it here... I just don't see it.

Google has even announced a new Netbook oriented open source OS. MS has invaded Google's search turf with Bing. So, it's only natural for Google to want to fire a shot across Microsoft's bow and announce an open source OS for netbooks. Of course, this new open source OS isn't due until late next year which is pretty 'forward looking' even for Google.

I'm not saying anything, but some people might think this announcement had as much to do with Bing's impressive (early) numbers than anything else. I don't think Google really believes they are going to be snatching much of Microsoft's OS business with this thing for netbooks, but it probably gives the hardware vendors the semblance of some bargaining chip with Redmond for a price break. I hope that isn't the rationale for the 10 month advance notice for the Chrome OS though, because that just sounds desperate.

But back to the actual gadgets. Somebody explain to me how these things aren't the the epitome of a useless 'tweener' device. Not quite a laptop, not quite a phone but still apparently considered desirable by some 30 million people. Basically so they can do stuff they were already doing with their phones and laptops.

I have used these things a little bit too, so telling me how the screens are bigger and the keyboards are nicer is only going to get you so far. We have one of these things floating around the office. The Sony P-Series even, one of the best you can buy. It's not even a 'real' netbook because it has laptop-ish specs. Guess what? The screen is still too small and it's sitting here somewhere collecting dust. Why? Even though it would be easy to carry around if you needed to, nobody needs to carry it around.

Google Wants To Save Your Life (Or Help End It)
Doug Caverly | Staff Writer

Pushes Google Health and advance directives

Health issues are highly personal. Some folks, for example, are scared of living for years on end without control of their bodies. Others are terrified that a plug will get pulled moments before they make a total recovery. And a certain search giant thinks both of these attitudes represent great reasons to start using Google Health.

A post on the Official Google Blog tells readers, "An advance directive allows you to determine your end-of-life wishes so that your family and doctor can honor them if you get sick and are unable to communicate." It has the ability to save all sorts of people all sorts of pain, and whatever your age or condition, is something you should consider completing.

Google just wants to make sure its software is part of the equation, and as it turns out, Google Health can now process scanned paper documents.

So the post continues, "Google Health is now working with a leading advance directive provider, Caring Connections, that provides a free, downloadable form customized for all 50 states. To complete your form, download it, print it out, complete it, scan it, and upload it to Google Health. Once you've uploaded the signed form, Google Health makes it easy to share it with your caregiver."

Admittedly, this seems morbid and a bit opportunistic. But the issue's an important one, and this may prove an effective tack for Google to take.

Facebook Testing New "Penguin FB" Twitter App?
Jeremy Muncy| Staff Writer

»» Do you think adding twitter-like apps to Facebook is necessary or a waste of time? What do you think?

Test tweet came from Facebook's dev servers

Recently Facebook engineer Blake Ross tweeted a test message from a mysterious Twitter app called "Penguin FB" which resides on Facebook's development servers. Now the question is, what exactly is Penguin FB?

The general consensus from various blogs is that Facebook is working on an app that would allow users to publish updates to their Twitter accounts from Facebook. Sure, they’re apps that currently allow this... but it seems Facebook wants their own.

InsideFacebook reports that they contacted company, asking about the Penguin FB app and they had no comment. Shortly after that, Blake deleted his test tweet. (You can still view his tweet via search.twitter).

It's no secret that Facebook is infatuated with Twitter. From the highly scrutinized redesign to the recent updates with the privacy features, which added ways for you to open up your update stream much like how Twitter does things.

Free Internet Marketing Tip 182

Shaping Web
Audience Preference

By Jerry Bader (c) 2009

Wouldn't it be wonderful if you had the power to convince people that your product or service was exactly what they needed, and as a consequence your in-box was filled with inquiries and your e-commerce site was stuffed with orders. Wouldn't that be great? And isn't that exactly what you want to achieve with your website?

The problem is you are part of a giant online bazaar called The Web; and just like your local weekend flea market The Web is filled with crap, conmen, and contraband. Without understanding some of the underlying psychological principles involved in shaping audience preference you are in danger of being regarded as just another mangy flea market hustler, even if what you offer is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The subject of shaping public perception, or in our case Web audience preference, is complex and convoluted but there are basic principles that if followed will help you achieve your business objectives, no matter how you define them.

The Four E-Essentials of Website Presentation

All the Google ads, search engine optimization, linking strategies, social networking, and Twitter twirping will be for naught if you don't implement four essential marketing communication techniques: engage, enlighten, embed, and re-enforce.

These four website presentation elements are easy to grasp but not always easy to implement. If you've read any of our other articles you will know that we think Web-video is the most effective way to implement these elements on your website and in your Web marketing. But just because you use video on your website, doesn't mean it's going to be effective unless you understand the psychology behind the e-essentials.

Perhaps the best way to illustrate how these elements work is to rent or find on YouTube a clip from the 1947 movie "The Hucksters" starring Clark Gable and Sydney Greenstreet. Now I haven't seen this movie in twenty years and I remember almost nothing about it except for one scene, a scene that illustrates better than anything, the four e-essentials of marketing and branding communication.

Engage, Enlighten, Embed, and Re-Enforce

Picture an old style boardroom, you know the ones with wood paneling, high-backed deeply padded chairs all filled with a bunch of executive flunkies and sycophants. At one end is Clark Gable, and his dapper boss Adolphe Menjou, and at the other end is an empty, ornate leather chair, almost like a throne.

An older heavy-set gentlemen, played by Sydney Greenstreet, walks in wearing a dark suit, light colored vest, and a matching pork-pie hat. He is the client, the owner of a large soap manufacturing company, 'Beauty Soap,' that has hired Gable's agency to help sell his product.

He proceeds to sit down at the head of the table, throws back his head, and expectorates (spits) onto the middle of the table. He then dramatically takes out a handkerchief from his breast pocket, wipes up the mess, and carelessly tosses the hankie on the floor, after which he tells the assembled ad men...

"You've just seen me do a disgusting thing, but you'll always remember what I just did. You see if nobody remembers your brand, you aren't going to sell any soap. ...I'll tell you a secret about the soap business. There's absolutely no difference between soaps, absolutely none, except for perfume and color... soap is soap... oh... maybe we have a few manufacturing tricks, but the public don't give a hoot about that..."

Embed The Brand

You may not like to hear it, but the truth is, most products and services are pretty much the same as their competitors. Sure some have a little more this, and others have a little more that, but for all intensive purposes, they're the same, the same except for one major thing, The Brand!

This sixty second clip from "The Hucksters" illustrates the need to engage your audience with a dramatic gesture, enlighten them with what they need to know, and do it all in a entertaining manner that embeds the brand, and what it stands for, in the audience's mind.

The Repetition Caveat

The last twenty seconds of the scene are a bit more controversial in my mind and if taken at face value can lead to a misunderstanding of the re-enforcing principle.

Greenstreet continues his rant by banging his fist on the table over-and-over again while saying,

"Beauty Soap, Beauty Soap, Beauty Soap, repeat it until it comes out of their ears, repeat it until they say it in their sleep, irritate them Mr. Norman [a reference to Gable], irritate, irritate, irritate them, never forget, knock them dead, until they never forget."

All the while Greenstreet emphatically bangs his fist on the table to emphasize his point. When he finally finishes his rant, he sweeps his hand dramatically across the table knocking a glass of water halfway across the room. He finishes by saying calmly, "See what I mean?"

Web Videos Shouldn't Be TV Commercials

Television advertisers seem to have taken the "irritation" part to heart, but I think the basic principle is dramatic repetition not irritation. Irritation may generate name recognition but with the wrong mental and emotional associations, while dramatic repetition shapes audience opinion and establishes brand preference. Not understanding the psychology behind the four e-essentials can lead to unsatisfactory results.

This scene from "The Hucksters" was satire and commentary on the nature of advertising, and its point-of-view was decidedly cynical, and with good cause. Television commercials drive the public up a wall with irritating repeated interruptions of the same hackneyed commercials over and over again, until the viewing audience goes numb.

As well, pointless user-generated videos may bemuse but without any targeted psychological influence or directed commercial purpose beyond attracting a lot of viewers.

Even expensive commercially produced viral videos that are clever, entertaining, and technically superb often forget to enlighten the audience and embed the brand. The recent viral Evian baby video maybe a brilliant technical achievement and superb filmmaking but does it sell more bottled water, or even distinguish Evian from its competitors. The problem is the brand gets lost in the technique, and the baby images over-power the product.

Gaining Competitive Advantage

It is human nature to want easy answers to complex questions, but people are frustratingly complex, and cannot be "pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered" like Patrick McGoohan's 'The Prisoner'.

Search engine optimization, social networking, user-generated videos, and viral-for-viral's sake are nothing more then marketing 'Pablum' that takes advantage of naive marketing newbies; they are trendy technical answers with the appearance of sophistication but with only the slightest understanding of subconscious human desire.

Technical answers to human questions ultimately won't work, or will only work with limited success because they ignore the need to understand the human condition, what makes you and everybody else want, what they want.

Gerald Zaltman, Professor Emeritus of Harvard Business School calls it understanding the "mind of the market." To quote Professor Zaltman from his book 'How Customers Think: Essential Insights into the Mind of the Market,'

"...the ability to grasp or understand the mind of the market and creatively leverage this understanding represents the next source of competitive advantage for marketers."

The Choice Is Yours

The average website business will continue to follow whatever trendy technical solution shows up on the blogs. But your competitor's willingness to follow the herd leaves the way wide open for you to take advantage of their failure; their misreading of what works.

Recognize the best way to communicate your offering to your Web audience is with a presentation delivered by a real human being, a presentation that engages, enlightens, and embeds in that audience's collective memory.

And when you're done, do it all over again in an even more memorable, dramatically entertaining manner.

Hi Joshua,
I was wondering if you have had a chance to look over the Google Job kit in my previous email? If you didn't receive it, then no problem, I'll re-explain everything.
Google is offering Business Kits to a select number of individuals. You do various tasks for them from an admin panel. It's nothing too too complicated, and it's paying pretty well. The story was brought to us by Shelly Sanders, who is featured on our homepage at TribuneGlobal.com - She's making around $5500/Mo right now working with them.
Basically, the deal is this. If you make less than $100,000 per year, then you are pre-qualified for the Business Kit. The reason Google can't accept anyone making more than that is tax related and puts them into some kind of penalty bracket.
So, if this is you then check out the cover story on our homepage. http://www.tribuneglobal.com - It gives the details, Shelly's experience and story as well as links to follow to the Business Kit.
Until next time,

Matt Cutts Talks Geo Tags and Webmaster Tools

Google's Matt Cutts frequently posts useful tips for webmasters on the Google Webmaster Central YouTube channel. The short clips generally offer valuable nuggets of info that can have an impact on your site's performance in Google.

In these videos, Matt always answers questions submitted by users, and in a recent one he answers the question: "How do meta geo tags influence search results?"

Noticed changes in your ranking based on geographic info? Discuss.

How do meta geo tags influence the search results?

Cutts says it's not something Google really looks at at all. He says they do look at:

- IP Address
- gTLD
- ccTLD

He also points out that there's a feature in Google's Webmaster Tools where you can tell it that your site pertains to a specific country even though it's a dot com. "Typically the geotags that are in meta tags are not as useful and We don't tend to give those as much weight if at all," says Cutts. He suggests spending your time:

- trying to make sure you have the right domain name

- trying to make sure you have the right IP address if you can

- If you have content (even if it's geo-located) even if it's a sub-domain or a sub-directory, you can specify it in Google's Webamster Tools. You can tell it that certain content is relevant for a particular country.

These are good things to keep in mind if geographic information is important to your site. Have you used the Webmaster Tools Feature Cutts refers to? Tell us about it.

Why Social Bookmarking?

By Tinu AbayomiPaul (c) 2009

Someone sent me the question "Why Social Bookmarking? "

And I thought to myself: "Um. Why not?"

Since I'm not really sure what they meant by that, I'm going to assume that this person mean "Why should I use social bookmarking in my business?" - with a full understanding of all the risks associated with "assuming".

I figure that if you're reading this, you have that question, or a similar one.

There are three reasons:

1 - More links

2 - More traffic

3 - More credibility

More links are always a good thing.

Think of links as the road traffic that moves through the web. If there are no roads to where your business "lives" online, namely your website, it's far less likely that the visitors you want will end up getting to you.

That's true whether you're talking about search engines or links from other sites. Search engines use a mysterious cross between the number and quality of links to your site in their determination of whether you should be number one or number 701 for your desired keyword.

In addition, the "nicer" the road, the more traffíc will flow through it - think of an authority site linking to your site as a highway that leads directly to your site, and one from a reciprocal link or link exchange scheme as a back street in a sketchy neighborhood full of potholes.

Improved traffic, also good.

From social bookmarking, this traffic is often targeted. Through tagging, the description someone writes, or the title they assigned to your link, the person who discovers the submitted link on a social bookmarking site knows exactly where they're going, and why they're interested in getting there.

It's like seeing the cover of a magazine on a rack. That's what pulls them in, they see a headline - and to get to the story they are compelled to take another action.

The more credibility thing is a bit harder to explain, so we'll go with another analogy.

Let's say I made a movie and I thought it was fantastic. If I hadn't met you before, and I tell you, "hey, I made a kick-ass movie, come see it!" - you may come see it, you may not.

It depends more on how much time you have and if you're interested in that kind of movie, or even how nice of a person you are, than my opinion.

Why?

Because I'm the one who made it, so you can't know whether to trust my opinion, at least in relation to how much YOU might like it. Of course I think it's great, but I have no way of knowing whether you will.

Now, if you knew me and my taste, and how alike our tastes are, you may be a bit more inclined. So if I'm, say, Michael Bay, and you liked my last movie, and my new movie is on the same type of thing, you might go see it based on the trailer alone. You know you're taking a gamble but it's a safe bet.

Now watch this.

Your best buddy, the one who likes all the same things you like, the one you hang out with and trust the most, calls you on the phone and says:

"I've just seen the best movie I've ever seen in my entire life. I have to see it again. When are you free, I'll come pick you up."

The only thing that could make that deal sweeter is if your friend has also said "My treat." At least as far as recommendations go, the person who knows what you like the most is likely to be the person whose advice you'll follow.

If you know that friend, and that person has similar tastes, or at least knows what you like, you're more likely to see the movie.

My sister and I have similar tastes in movies, but I'm a little more patient with beginnings and endings and like more indie-fare. Yet, no matter how many times I have suggested we watch a movie together that she ends up not liking as much, if I rave about a movie, she'll at least give it a chance.

Now, let's take that back to social bookmarking. Imagine you can find hundreds of people, all over the world, with tastes similar to yours, sharing information you wouldn't find yourself.

Or maybe you can just connect faster and more frequently for suggestions from people you already know. Wouldn't you be more likely to follow their suggestions than some stranger?

That's the power of social bookmarking. It's put a technology behind word of mouth sharing of web sites that anyone can use.

And they do.

Now all you have to do is learn how to be the person or company everybody is spreading the word about. Which is another conversation altogether.

The Google Shuffle?
(Has Your Website Recently Sunk to "Davy Google Jones Jr's Locker"?)

By Jonathan Anthony & Kyle Krenbrink (c) 2009

Webmasters and SEO gurus have been scratching their heads for a few weeks now trying to figure out what has been happening to Google's SERP rankings. After scouring blogs and forums for the last few days, it would seem that there is no real consensus. In fact, it seems that no one is willing to even speculate much as to what is happening. To date there has not been any official word from Google. We all know that Google does not announce their algorithm updates, much to the chagrin of webmasters everywhere.

The buzz recently on several blogs and from our own data demonstrates significant changes in PageRank and wild fluctuations in websites SERP. The last big news we did hear from Google was the June 16th 2009 announcement from Matt Cutts blog on PageRank sculpting where he discussed changes to how Google treats link juice when there are nofollow links. But that's another blog topic altogether so if you like you can read the full post here: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ pagerank-sculpting/ so it may be that the nofollow·attribute has been rendered useless for sculpting PageRank. But then, PR sculpting was never really the intended function behind nofollow; it was merely convenient side effect.

Download Snagit from TechSmith

All that Google employee, John Mu cared to say when answering a customer's inquiry as to why his site had suddenly dropped in PR with no apparent cause was:

"Hi Radoslav
You have a nice-looking site :) . As far as I can tell, it looks like the change in Toolbar PageRank for your site is only due to some technical quirk and not something that you need to worry about.

Cheers
John
"

Barry Schwartz (AKA "Rustybrick") then pointedly asks:

"John, is the PR 'Technical Quirk' somewhat widespread?"

There was no further reply from Google. The post is available at the Google Webmaster Help forum.

Unfortunately, when a person's website goes south in rankings for no apparent reason, people do notice and do worry about it. So unless Google opens up a bit we are left scratching our heads as usual, trying to figure out what is going on.

The following thread gives another vote to the possibility that Google is replacing PageRank value with site trust and/or domain authority: http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/020335.html. This is also one of many threads where users are expressing frustration and beginning to consider trying the new alternative to Google, Bing. Watch your back Google.

There have been some major experiments this year from Google that were relatively short lived and those are fine. We all expect to see the occasional wild results for a weekend every few months along with quarterly PageRank updates. The June PR update was enough of a surprise coming so close on the heels of an update late in May: http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/020273.html. The update itself is not too shocking. What is interesting is that this is happening so soon after Google's last update and the fact that garbage results and rapid ranking changes have been coming steadily for weeks now. It's about time Google lets things settle down before more people get the bright idea to give Bing a try.

Here are some direct comments from the forum members at webmasterworld.com:

http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3943981-4-30.htm

"It has been my observation "followgreg" (a username) when the SERP's get like what you describe above this is what [Google] wants to happen so the Review team and Matt's team can put the necessary data in place that will deal with what your describing. It is easier to review a site when they are on page 1 versus page 200 and [Google] knows what filters were relaxed that would allow for the "New" 1st page ranking to pop up. I myself don't see the polluted SERP's as your describing but then again I am not in every sector and can only look at the nitches I am working under."

SPNbabble - A Shortcut to Marketing with Social Media!

http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3943981-2-30.htm "and right now it looks like all sets of the results include some trivial and penalized and junk .edu pages rising into the top 50, along with some long-neglected good ones. This used to happen all the time with updates -- shuffle things up, the poop rises, then it gets flushed, and things settle down. We haven't had an update in that format in a long time, but it seems clear we are in the middle of whatever is changing and not the end."

We can analyze the SERP's, collect all the data we can find, and listen to all of the "buzz" we like, but at the end of the day we are still at the mercy of the "Big G". It is not unusual for Google to conduct their more aggressive algorithm changes at this time of year, but it is unusual to see so much experimentation so close together taking so long. With there being no official word coming from Google, it's hard to do more than speculate on the changes that we can observe. We all certainly hope that things stabilize soon and we'll continue monitoring changes in the rankings.

But until Google decides to straighten things out can anyone say "Pay-per-click"? I knew you could...

So how does the widely varied public opinion on the matter line up with search results?

I am willing to make an educated guess that Google is experimenting with website trust and authority in their algorithm (and perhaps plenty more). However, as complaints from the forums echo Google's search results seem to be rather bi-polar these last few weeks.

We have well established sites being outranked by new sites and by sites with very few backlinks. Also by sites using black hat techniques and unfortunately we see some established and often very trustworthy white hat websites simply dissappearing from the rankings altogether. At the same time we have literally day old Craigslist posts ranking in the top results. Some .edu and .gov sites have flown to the top while others have plummetted.

Forget Expensive PPC Advertising - There is an Alternative!
How often do you see day old pages rank near the top for competitive search terms? If "trust" has that much of an effect on a new page's rankings it's likely that "trusted" sites will dominate the rankings with every new page of content flooding out the competition and reducing their ability to gain trust. I hope the minds at Google have their sober thinking caps on and not their beer hats. But so far there seems to be little consistant rhyme or reason since we have some trusted sites dissappearing and others dominating in the SERP's.

Luckily we had some old SERP analysis notes from June where we had a close look at one of our clients top 5 competitors for their targeted search term on Google. We decided to compare each against the current search results since Google's latest "technical quirk". Here's the rundown according to Yahoo's api and our analysis:

Former #1 website - PR 4 landing page, PR 5 root domain.
1700+ external inbound links, 800+ internal backlinks. Almost one thousand of these backlinks are from a handful of what appear to be allied sites. A significant number are from various blogs. Strong root domain with almost 5k external inbound links. Now ranking at #2.

Former #2 website - PR 6 landing page, PR 7 root domain.
Less than 100 external inbound links, over 15k internal backlinks. Root domain has 140k+ external inbound links and 16k+ internal backlinks. Very strong root domain and what should be a high trust name. Much of the page's ranking comes from the internal backlinks from the root domain and other pages on the site. Now ranking at #5.

Former #3 website - PR 4 landing page, PR 7 root domain.
5k+ external inbound links, less than 100 internal backlinks. Root domain has 130k+ external inbound links and 16k+ internal backlinks. Not only is this an extremely strong domain, its brand is a household name across North America. Not only would I trust this site based on its name and reputation, but I would say the incoming links are as organic as they come. Strangely this website no longer ranks anywhere in the top 300 results.
